Christina Crawford’s ‘Mommie Dearest’ musical steers clear of camp

by Eric Hegedus   6/6/2019

NY POST

"The memoir detailed the physical and mental pain she and her brother allegedly suffered at the hands of their adoptive mother. The musical follows the same timeline, from the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s to 1977, when Joan died. Christina and composer and co-lyricist David Nehls used music from different periods to show the passage of time: 1940s jazz, 1960s doo-wop and 1970s folk.

Given the topic is the “very serious subject matter” of child abuse, says Tina Scariano, the actress playing Christina, they’ve taken care not to turn the story into farce, the way the 1981 film did.

The film is still a sore subject for Christina, who turns 80 on Tuesday."

Out of the Box Theatrics recently hosted a reading of a new musical based on Crawford’s memoir, Mommie Dearest, the inspiration for the 1981 cult classic.

The musical’s book was written by Crawford, music by David Nehls (The Great American Trailer Park Musical) with lyrics written by both Crawford and Nehls.

"Composer David Nehls and Christina Crawford have created the musical (based on the 40th anniversary edition of the memoir), complete with two New York readings directed by Joe Barros. The musical, with a book by Christina Crawford, Music by David Nehls and lyrics by Crawford and Nehls, tells the courageous story of brother and sister struggling to survive the abuse by a powerful sociopathic Hollywood woman against all odds, with neither power nor money of their own.   Photos by Kevin Alvey

Mommie Dearest Author Christina Crawford Opens Up About Her Past and How She’s Moving Forward

EARLY BIRD BOOKS    11/17/2017

"My latest project has been to write a musical adaptation of Mommie Dearest. With composer, lyricist, and friend David Nehls, it has now been created as a two-act musical for the theater.

Since I began my career as an actress, my first love was the theater; it is a joy to see this work come alive.

In September 2017, we did what is called a 29-Hour Reading of the musical in New York. That was the first time David and I heard the music sung by professional actors all the way through. What an amazing experience that was for both of us. Director Joe Barros was so skillful that each day the piece evolved was like watching magic..."

Out of the Box Theatrics Presents Reading of MOMMIE DEAREST

Broadway World    9/1/2017

Off Broadway's Out of the Box Theatrics (Elizabeth Flemming, Producing Artistic Director and Ethan Paulini, Associate Artistic Director) present Mommie Dearest. Based on the legendary bestselling memoir by Christina Crawford, this new musical adaptation has a book by Christina Crawford, music by David Nehls (The Great American Trailer Park Musical), and lyrics by both Crawford and Nehls.

The focal point of the musical Mommie Dearest is the mystery meaning of language in a will, disinheriting the two eldest adopted children of a famous Hollywood movie star and made public after her death. Told primarily from the coming-of-age point of view of a brother-sister pair as they grow up, struggle with adversity and try to remain family even as they are forced down different paths, the musical explores three decades of American culture.Their story is a triumph of the human spirit when set against unrepentant cruelty.
